On draught from Germany:
Foreign Beer
This year the Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival has teamed up with Dan and Rob from the Bottle Shop in Roath for a selection of German beers.
Jever Pils, 4.9% ABV
Brewed in a brewery founded in 1848, Jever Pils typifies the very dry style of pilsner from Friesland in the North-West corner of Germany and is lagered for 90 days.
Schenkerla Marzen, 5.1% ABV
A speciality of Bamberg, this beer is a dark, bottom fermented smokebeer, brewed with smoked malt from the brewery’s own maltings. The brewpub was first mentioned in 1405 and has been in the same family for six generations.
Brewers & Union Unfiltered Lager, 5% ABV
Brewers & Union are an unique collaboration that involves South African and Portuguese brewers who brew at different breweries around the world, this particular beer is brewed in Bavaria.
Their unfiltered lager is pale straw in colour and pours with a foamy white head. Being an unfiltered beer there is yeast in the finished beer giving it a naturally cloudy appearance. Freshly cut grass and fresh baked bread provide the aromas to this beer. A smooth, bitter-sweet flavour with vanilla hints leads to a dry, astringent finish with a subtle lingering bitterness.
Brewers & Union Steph Weisse, 5% ABV
A wheat beer, pale orange in colour, naturally cloudy with a rich, foamy-white head. The aroma is heavy with cloves, this is a characteristic of wheat beers and is imparted by the yeast used to brew them. An initial bitter flavour is soon displaced in the mouth by the rich, spiciness of more cloves and oranges. The rich spiciness continues well into the aftertaste with some dryness added as well.
Brewers & Union IPA, 5.5% ABV
A fresh, fruity and gentle IPA, golden, hazy-orange in colour with hints of baked apricot and wild honey. The soft carbonation leads to a lingering fruity, malty, herbal-hoppy finish.
